The San Bruno ring
The excursion winds up between the Cavallo Valley and the S. Bruno Valley, in the woods which during centuries supplied wood and charcoal. The Carthusian monks programmed meticulously during the centuries the agricultural and sheep-breeding with great sensitivity and attention to nature and respect for environment. The signs of these activities, like for example the crossed boundary stones for the division of the woody lots, are visible along the crest lines of the entire Pesio Valley.
The excursion starts from the Carthusian monastery following at the beginning the naturalistic route and then take the forest road of the Cavallo Valley, which crosses the splendid broad-leaved and silver fir woods, where you can easily meet roe deer during wintertime, which under the big firs find the necessary food. Follow the street for about 2,5 km following the indications for Gias del Baus d'lula (1hour and 30 min.) situated at 1250 m inside the artificial larch grove, planted during the Fascist period where there was a big pasture 80 years ago. Here the climbing finishes and following the indications for Grangia di S. Michele you start along the road, once used as connection among the numerous carbonyl farmyards, recognizable as the unique level areas along the steep slope. Cross the entire S. Bruno Valley, named after the founder of the Carthusian Order (attention when passing the ford) and you'll reach along a nice beechwood the Clearing "Prà da Turta". Here you proceed till Grangia Certosina di S. Michele (1.125 m 2 hours and 15 min.), situated on a broad panoramic hillock dominating the entire Valley. Proceed the crest and pay attention not to miss the marks till reaching the Farmhouse S. Paolo (1.035 m 2 hours and 30 min.) and from here on the left following the forest route and after having re-crossed the S. Bruno Valley, you'll return to the Certosa di Pesio (3 hours and 15 min).
