The first wolf sighting on this territory dates back to the first years of the nineties. In 1999 the Piedmont Region started a research project to monitor, study and understand the reasons of this return.

A group of researchers, assisted by the staff of the park started a research work regarding the traces of the predators: excrements, predations on wild and tame animals, signs in the snow and any testimony of passage became source of a precious research in order to analyse the movement and the habits of the wolfs among the Ligurian and Maritime Alps. The aim of the project is to set up a research on broad scale which involves Italian and French researches in order to elaborate a right conservation and a correct management of the presence of this predator in the Alpine ecosystem.
