Some history
The first settlements in the Valley are dating back from the late Bronze Era and the final phases of the Iron Era. Tens of cinerary urns belonging to these eras and bronze finds have been found on the Cavanero Mountain, overhanging the built-up area. Roman ruins, even if less numerous, are traceable in the castrum at the back of the ruins of the Mirabello castle and in the finding of minted coins during the third century after Christ.
The first written document regarding the Valley dates back to 1173 and it represents a deed where Messrs. Morozzo, feudal lords upon charge of the bishop of Asti, gave the upper Pesio Valley to the Carthusian order, thus placing the basis for the construction of the Carthusian monastery. Then the territory passed under the influence of the Marquises of Ceva and starting from the XVII century, the territory was linked to the destiny of Solaro di Moretta and to the Reign of the Savoy. A heavy plunder by the French and Spanish troops is signalled in 1774. The Napoleonic troops plundered the Carthusian monastery in 1802 instead, losing an enormous artistic patrimony.
The industrial development took place during the eighteenth - and nineteenth-century. Besides the Glass and Crystal Factory Organisation, which gave prestige and fame to the Valley, also four spinning mills, a limestone factory and a factory for the tanning extraction were built and all of them used the water energy of the Pesio. The population increased till counting about 8000 people. The museum of the Glass and Crystal and Ceramics Factory Organisation represents a real historical course, which restores within an exhibition space a broad view of this past and thriving industrial and craftworks reality.
The twentieth-century is a very hard century for the Pesio Valley, marked by wars and migratory stream from the mountainous areas. After the armistice in 1943, the Valley becomes famous for the engagement of its Partisan band, guided by the legendary captain Cosa. The Resistance museum in Chiusa di Pesio is the evidence of this troubled historical phase. You can also visit the memorial of the Partisans, ex-cemetery, on the territory of the Park.
