The Roman ruins
The Augusta Bagiennorum colony, founded by Augustus during a program for the repopulation and the farming exploitation of the territory, became very soon a centre of great importance and had a thriving life for at least three centuries. In fact the archaeological ruins give the idea of a rich and wide city: quadrangular towers have been discovered as well as the forum, a temple, the civil basilica, the thermal baths, the waterworks, many houses, a theatre of about 60 m diameter and a big amphitheatre just outside the city.
The first archaeological campaigns in the area were realized at the beginning of the twentieth-century by the Benesi archaeologists Assandria and Vacchetta. During the fifties the Ministry of National Heritage and Environment expropriated the lands and established the archaeological area. Then the digging continued due to the engagement of the Municipality of Bene Vagienna and the Archaeological Superintendency.
An archaeological museum with Roman finds of great interest can be visited in the centre of Bene Vagienna.
